Trinity Way

Change, all at once. You wait forever, spend time planning for it, seek it out in far corners and distant reaches…then, because this is Sod’s world and we all just live in it, it comes at a rush.

New places, new focus, new people. As a creature of habit with a tight reign over the kingdom in my head, my initial reaction was to resist. Then the words I uttered at the start of last year came to me, and I remembered what I promised to do more often…just roll with it.

So I did. I rolled all the way home, baby.

On Tuesday I went to Cambridge. Never been before, didn’t know much about it, other than that I wanted to go. The weather wasn’t perfect, and I felt sick in the morning, but there were beautiful buildings to be seen, crumbling books of poetry to be rescued and brought back to the soggy Midlands (ancient volumes of Shelley and Algernon have joined the leaning stacks in my flat).

Banana crumble cupcakes

Banana Crumble Cupcakes

Banana is good. So is crumble. And cake. Why not combine the three and see what comes of it? Sounds like a plan! These soft, melt-in-the-mouth cupcakes are topped with a sweet vanilla buttercream and a slice of fresh banana. Seriously moreish, this just might be my new favourite recipe! The quantities listed will make a dozen vegan, gluten-free cupcakes. Continue reading for the recipe and more photos…

Doors 101.2: Influence

You shouldn’t drive under the influence, but you should certainly write under it. Surround yourself with what you love, what gets you thinking, and drain it dry. It’d be impossible to try and pinpoint every moment and object and idea that contributed to Doors, but I’ll do my best to highlight what was most important to me.

But first, let’s take a look at the proof copy that landed on my lap this week…

Rusty takes the envelope, finds it holds nothing but a scrap of paper and two blurry polaroids. He squints at the pictures, smirks as he reads the scruffy writing on the back of the envelope. ‘Dac, come look at this.’

(this video is longer than I would have liked, but persevere!)

DOORSFACT #2: The book has 20 appendices which tie into the main story. You can either read the main narrative from start to finish, then treat the appendices as a wordy dessert, or weave in and out of them as you make your way through, pausing the narrative to visit an appendix after reaching the appropriately referenced footnote. The choice is yours.

In the video above I talk about music; here are the songs I wanted to share. I promise there is no Backstreet Boys this week. Part of me knows I should include a song by The Doors, but…nah.

Next week: Come and meet my dear friend Rusty Halo. He will wear a tie and comb his hair and not have too much to drink beforehand.

What did the rabbit say to the carrot?

It’s been nice gnawing you.

One of the recipes I posted late last year spoke of a sweet my mum used to make when she was younger, which we tried to recreate…whilst rifling through all papers brought out of storage, she found the original recipe. What are the chances? The cherry nibbles, as they were known, are a delight.

Good Friday was spent in Chester, visiting my brother Daniel and his fiancée Sarah. I love Chester, it’s a beautiful place; we explored the shops for a few hours (I found a Mervyn Peake biography and lovely little book about Shelley in a shop on the wall), ate chips and drank elderberry spritzer by the river, then went back to their flat for tea and cupcakes. Sarah is coeliac so Susan and I baked a batch of gluten-free cupcakes, which turned out brilliantly.

I also baked a batch of vegan banana crumble cupcakes, which very possibly just might be my new favourite cake in the world:

Lysander approves!

Walking is apparently more exhausting than it used to be. When I got home in the evening I was ready to drop, and just curled up in bed with the second part of A Dance with Dragons. Still not enough Jaime. This saddens me. I finished it off this morning, and good lord, I can’t wait for the next one. Please don’t make us wait years, ser!

Easter is here, and my last free wekend before starting work at the university library. On Tuesday I’m thinking a trip to Cambridge is in order, just because it looks beautiful, and before that I should probably sort myself out and see if there’s anything smart to wear in my wardrobe. Chances are slim.

My Easter bunnies are so spoilt; they have their own yoghurt-flavoured egg. For the first time in years I have some, too! Time to sit down and do little for the remainder of the afternoon…once I’ve posted this week’s Doors-related blog, of course. Busy busy busy.

These cupcakes aren’t vegan, but they could easily be veganised simply by replacing the egg with a little oil and water (or an egg-replacer of your choosing). We baked them for my brother’s fiancée, Sarah, who is coeliac – these delicate, delicious cupcakes are dairy-free, gluten-free and good for the soul as well as the stomach. The quantities listed will make a dozen cupcakes. Continue reading for the recipe and more photos…
