Referencing appendices shouldn't be too much of an issue, since you could use them in pretty much the same way as footnotes or chapter listings - readers click a section of text like an internet hyperlink and it shoots them to the appendix you've linked to.

Haha, well bribery's always a great plan (and cake's totally the fastest way to my heart), but I wouldn't ask anything for it, especially since it could all go terribly wrong and might not pan out the way I'd hoped. But barring any sections that require origami or knowledge of ancient Arabic, I can't foresee any major problems. And I'm always glad of a fun project to work on, so it's no problem whatsoever! :)

I did originally plan to have parts in colour, but I've decided against that now so black and white isn't a problem. I will be referencing page numbers in the printed version, to more easily link the reader to the appendices, but if that's not possible then I guess I can just take them out and hope the reader finds their own way! And I'll have to experiment with the illustrations, once I have them uploaded. I'd love to do a digital version that had all of these extras in, they really add to the effect of the story. Good to know footnotes work, they're vital! Shame they don't appear at the end of each page, but at least they'd be there at all.

I don't want to heap something on you - obviously I would be BEYOND grateful if you wanted to have a bash at it (I can pay you, make you cakes, acknowledge you in the book itself, shower you with free copies!!! :) *this is not a bribe*) because I have a feeling you'd do a marvellous job. But only if you absolutely have the time and don't mind? Just let me know. I'm going to start on finalising the copy and embedding all the extra bits, hopefully soon, so I could probably send it to you via email or some such device by the end of March. I'm shooting to get everything done by the start of June so I can set up distribution in time for July. So you'd have loads of time and wouldn't need to worry about getting it done in a hurry, if you did want to take a look at it. xoxx

Sounds awesome! :D I shall have to get a pre-order in soon. :)

It's not necessarily impossible, but it depends on how weird the formatting gets. If colour is important anywhere in the book, then it'd be impossible to translate it digitally, since Kindles only display in black and white. And if specific page numbers are important, that would be a big problem, too, since Kindles and a lot of e-readers don't use page numbers - what actually shows up on what page can vary wildly depending on people's Kindle font and display preferences.

Other than that, almost any formatting weirdness is entirely possible to translate, though it won't be exactly the same as the print book.

Handwritten pages are completely possible, but the best way to display them would be by including them as images the exact size/resolution of the Kindle screen, which means they'd be a lot smaller in size and quality than a full A4 page of handwritten notes. The same with sketches and pictures - small images will display perfectly (in black and white) wherever you want them, but depending on the size, larger images might have to be shrunk down to fit the screen.

Footnotes are easily translated, too, though with the Kindle not having pre-set pages, the footnotes would be presented as a list at the end of each chapter rather than at the bottom of individual pages. Readers click the little footnote number, the Kindle pops them over to read the footnote, then they press the back button to return to where they were (you could use the same hyperlinking process to navigate to and from appendices, too).

I'd be more than happy to take a stab at formatting and translating it to Kindle-friendly format if you like?

:D So excited! There'll be a proper announcement and promo webpage, giveaway details, Twitter stuff, etc. very soon. Woohoo!

I really want to do a digital version, but as you say, I don't know if the weird format will make it impossible. :\ I wonder if there's an expert in digital eBook formatting who'd be able to help me out. xox

"Doors will be published 16th July 2012"

Yay! Can't wait! :) Will there be a Kindle version, or will the experimental House of Leavesy formatting and such rule that out?
