Skies over

I’ve got wings
I’m going places,
ain’t it good to say that and mean it?

Standing in line for a flight
that’ll take me where I want to be
streets lined with palm trees
skateboarders with ripped knees
words coming with ease now,
it pleases me. I smile at myself
and for the first time I mean it.
This freedom, feeling found in
flights of fancy, lyrics that get me
dancing to the beat in my mind.

I missed it when it left me behind

but it’s back now.
I missed you, old friend.
Tongue trip tripping over rhymes that never end
waking early maybe don’t sleep at all
just fall in love with a morning
like the others, this one only comes once
so fuck the warnings, just leap and then tumble
slipping blindly into your favourite place,
the creativity you will always chase.

She’s like a lady
with her best dress on,
necklace and earrings shaped like swallows,
leading you further down a path
you’re only too happy to follow.
Imagination is my fickle mistress
but I love her, crave her nonetheless.
And she needs me, too,
I know this.
We cling to each other.
Aren’t we something,
a sight to behold?

Got my cowboy boots
some bad ideas
dusty streets to stalk
head fixed on a boy so well-read
he is literal. Literally fine,
and if she lets me, my lady,
I’ll craft words that shine
to make him stutter and stumble
down pathways of old
I trod once with past loves
in years out of mind.

They’re his now.
They can be,
these cracked slabs and road signs,
white picket fence we can fix up flowers stood in neat lines
Make him mine, kind lady,
